Dads can get pregnancy symptoms too
Yes it is very real and is termed as couvade syndrome. It is very rare but has been documented in dads all over the world who claimed to have experienced pregnancy symptoms from the end of the first trimester till the very end along with their wives. According to San Diego ob-gyn Norman Duerbeck fathers undergo the symptoms due to stress and empathy. Stress releases chemicals in the body that can manifest as sympathetic pregnancy. Pregnancy is often stressful for both parties due to financial worries, health concerns, and good old-fashioned cold feet. Add a little empathy to the mix, and you have a perfect recipe for couvade.
Tall mummies are more likely to conceive twins
According to a study by Gary Steinman, an obstetrician at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2006 taller women are in fact more likely to give birth to twins. The study revealed that taller women have more insulin-like growth factor (IGF), a protein released from the liver in response to growth hormone.
This protein causes the ovaries to be more likely to release more than one egg at a time.
What else she grows during pregnancy
During pregnancy women’s wombs are not the only thing that grows. The size of the feet and heart can grow considerably as well. There is a hormone the body produces during pregnancy called Relaxin that facilitates the birth process by causing a lengthening and softening of the cervix and the pubic symphysis which also allows the ligaments in the feet to stretch.
You can get pregnant when you’re already pregnant
It is sad but true. Sex during pregnancy is supposed to be care free but on rare occasions women can get pregnant again. It is an odd phenomenon known as superfetation that causes a pregnant woman to release an egg a few weeks into her pregnancy which gets fertilized after intercourse.
It happened to a woman in Arkansas, who carried two children with two different due dates. A handful of women had undergone this phenomenon.
The line was already there
Yes the dark line that appears out of nowhere straight down the stomach during pregnancy was actually always there. Dr. Nina Hinting of Baltimore says pregnancy hormones change the pigmentation that causes it to show more.
For some women it disappears after birth for others it stays the way it was during pregnancy.
Babies do all sorts of things while in the womb
Yes it has been said that babies cry inside your womb. But recent studies show that babies have been documented to do many more ranging from sucking their thumbs and holding hands to masturbating and waving hello.
The miracle of birth
Ever wonder why mothers don’t die bleeding during deliver. It’s because mother’s blood clots faster and more easily during delivery due to a protective mechanism during the delivery of the placenta.
Hot baths during pregnancy are a menace
A lot of people think it’s a myth but this has been scientifically proven to be true. Pregnant women should avoid saunas, Jacuzzis or anything that raises the body temperature over 102 degrees because anything hotter can damage baby’s developing body cells.
The folksy myth that came true
According to researchers at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, pregnant women with moderate heartburns were reported to have hairy newborns 82 percent of the time. Study’s lead author, Kathleen a. Costigan, R.N, M.P.H., director of the hospital’s Fetal Assessment Center said that higher levels of estrogen and progesterone, the pregnancy hormones that stimulate fetal hair growth, also relax the esophageal sphincter.
This allows stomach acid to back up into the esophagus and cause gastric reflux, or heartburn.
Yes this phenomenon is also true. Pregnant women have less oxygen in their blood which causes forgetfulness that people calls pregnancy brain.
